British Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Warning Roster with Eleven Countries
British authorities has placed an additional eleven more countries to its travel advisory list regarding the risks of toxic alcohol toxicity from adulterated beverages.
The updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.
Only recently, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following a number of serious events like the tragic death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being cautions that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hrs.
Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous substance often used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.
While it is generated during the manufacture of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the refining procedure.
However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.
Government Guidance for Tourists
Government representative Hamish Falconer stated that each tourist should know the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"While drinking spirits overseas, choose reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.
"If something appears suspicious, for example a hangover that's way worse than usual or sight issues – seek medical attention fast."
The entire list of destinations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
