Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
