Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The former official declared he would retreat from public duties after Congressional panel disclosed his repeated messages with the financier

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the potential of the company, and eagerly await observing their progress".

The prominent academic, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public communications showed that Summers communicated with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the technology organization said it respected the economist's choice to depart.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board," OpenAI commented.

Legislative Background

This news follows after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on recently to pass a legislation that would require the US justice department to disclose its documents on Epstein.

The measure will then move to the administration of the White House for approval. He has said he intends to endorse the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-connected messages made public by the legislative panel last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those figures.

The emails showed that the economist and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce the academic to prominent global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were shared with the wider community, he expressed he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and fix bonds with the people nearest to me".

Professional History

Summers held senior posts under party leaders; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He presided over the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in Washington where he was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be connected with the institution.

He entered the directorate of the technology firm, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
