Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
