Praise from Pep for ‘Street Footballer’ Cherki Before Villarreal Clash
City manager Guardiola, who has worked with icons including the Argentine maestro, Iniesta, and the midfield orchestrator, has declared that Cherki ranks among the most gifted footballers he has ever witnessed and believes the forward will buy into the unselfish mentality at the Premier League side.
Comeback from Layoff
The Frenchman, who signed for the Sky Blues from Ligue 1 for £30.5m in time for the FIFA Club World Cup in June, has managed a mere seven games to date. Coming back from a thigh injury, he made a brief appearance in the success against the Toffees last matchday, where he came close to assisting a strike for the Norwegian.
Now, he has made the trip for the Villarreal game and could make his Champions League bow in a City shirt.
Guardiola’s Insight
While calling for patience, the manager struggled to articulate his talent, admitting that the only concern is how he fits in into the structure and gets used to executing fundamental plays consistently.
“Rayan is among the greatest stars I have ever seen in my career,” stated the manager, puffing out his cheeks. “Technically and individually he is excellent. The issue is his integration and his perception of the game, what the match demands. He started in the intercontinental cup, though he had time off. It’s about taking it gradually, yet his ability is clear: I believe that frequently when possession comes to him, the attack becomes more dangerous.
“He doesn’t always attempt incredible actions; he should simply make basic plays. Yet he possesses a special quality. For example, the through ball to Haaland late in the game, plus countless other things he can do.
“He’s the type who doesn’t feel stress when receiving the ball. He is like a playground player. He shows annoyance – ‘give me the ball’ – when he doesn’t get it, you know. He hasn’t been a brief period with us; it will take a while as you have to play together.”
When asked if Cherki would fit within the group dynamic, he replied: “Without a doubt. Such individuals have great feel, very smart. They see everything.”
Kudos for the Midfielder
The coach also praised Nico González, who is expected to play in the heart of the park. The team’s usual starter is present back to his old team, and is likely celebrated before the match at the Estadio de la Cerámica, but is out with a muscle problem.
Guardiola noted: “I have the impression that he is progressing steadily. We’re really pleased with his approach and he will develop further. He is well-rounded, receptive, a wonderful person. His mum and dad should be extremely proud of the person and footballer he’s grown into. He has to remain authentic, but when you play with elite teammates, you gain experience. You notice how your game can improve, however, González has to be himself, for sure.”
Squad’s Improving Performance
Guardiola also was effusive regarding the team’s improving displays. “We are scoring a lot of goals, generating lots of chances, while also giving up little. We’ve played just eight fixtures in the league plus two in European competition, though I sense that each game is better than the previous one and will be surpassed by the upcoming.
“We discuss frequently ways to enhance and methods to read the game improve. I have great trust in the players and I realize the individuals are training intensely. We are displaying excellent condition.”
