Premier League Headlines: Hannibal Suspended for Spitting; City Boss Insists 'Back Line Has to Improve'
From the world of Premier League developments, a significant player was handed a substantial suspension, a head coach has pointed out a defender's errors to prove an argument, and the Manchester City manager has demanded backline improvements after a chaotic victory.
Mejbri Handed Four-Game Suspension and Fine
Burnley's midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been issued a four-game suspension and a financial fine for misconduct during October's fixture versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed Mejbri faced a separate regulatory commission after an incident where he spat in the direction of away fans at the 67-minute mark during a 2-0 win by Burnley.
A release explained: “An independent Regulatory Commission has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to misconduct during the Premier League match against Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that he behaved in breach of the rules of football or in an improper way by engaging in offensive and unacceptable behaviour through spitting at or in the area of Leeds United supporters.”
It added, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game suspension and £15,000 following a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for its decisions will be published in due course.” The team, currently 19th in the Premier League table, visit 12th-place Newcastle this Saturday.
Maresca Points to Adarabioyo's Errors to Make an Argument
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has argued that not having seasoned players is not a problem at team, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from playing a bad game during the defeat to Leeds United.
The Italian coach, who manages the youngest squad in the division, rejected the idea that inexperience played a part in their setback. He made his case by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced outfield player on the pitch, after he produced a mistake-riddled display in central defence.
“We always mention a lack of experience when we fail to win,” the coach stated. “After we beat Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, nobody was talking about older personnel. I understand that when we lose, we are constantly searching for an explanation, but I think the reason why we didn’t win against Leeds was not down to the experience, it was because we just weren't at our best.”
He added, “Who is the oldest one on our team in the match? It was Tosin. Did he play any good? So, it isn't related to experience. It's that those 11 players, they were simply not good enough.”
3. Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Has to Improve'
Pep Guardiola has stated the champions have learnt from their recent thriller against Fulham with the game has now been forgotten. The team survived to claim a 5-4 victory during a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with almost an hour played.
Coming after they resisted a comeback and won 3-2 in the prior game, prompting further doubts regarding if City are the defensive steel enough to sustain a title challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “That game is forgotten,” he commented. “Good learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, you have to learn from what happens performances and results and think of what's next.”
“Naturally I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse the cause, so as not to concede the goals. With the three goals scored by Leeds, and five by Fulham you can see our versions, correct? Therefore, always done plenty of good things. But the number of attempts had Leeds have? Three? They scored two. It’s not bad. And shots on target for Fulham have? Five, six? So, our ratio of chances conceded we can see too high. We have to improve.”
Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Contracts
Newcastle United's new football chief, Ross Wilson, has made contract negotiations with important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list for the club. He arrived from Nottingham Forest in October and is reassured to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali has a contract that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.
That has left Wilson to prioritise negotiations with Livramento and Botman's agents. With the former’s agreement ending in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, the club's talks have assumed some urgency.
“My first few days after starting is when I found that Sandro’s deal was significantly more secure than I had thought,” said Wilson. “But it’s well known that the club would want to extend Tino’s deal and we wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are ongoing.”
Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the match with Burnley this Saturday, with the defender expected to remain sidelined for at least a further period.
5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start Against Brighton
West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá is back to the starting lineup when they face Brighton this Sunday, after serving a ban for the sending-off against Liverpool.
“That incident is in the past,” the manager said. “I am confident it won't be repeated as he himself acknowledged his mistake. We discussed it in the dressing room. I believe the matter is closed and it will not happen again.”
Nuno also acknowledged the intense strain on his side, who are in the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's fixtures. “We cannot ignore it,” he admitted. “It is the situation. We must confront it. We're fighting for our top-flight status. We cannot hide it.”
6. Arteta Impressed by Striker Deputy Merino
Mikel Merino may keep his place as Arsenal’s centre-forward even when their regular strikers return from injury. The midfielder has been deployed as an emergency number nine due to injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Merino found the net for the opener versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second in a 2-0 win that maintained {their|
