Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Producers Over Autism Assertions

Legal Action
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump seeking election to US Senate, accused the drug companies of concealing the risks of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Paxton is suing the producers of Tylenol, claiming the firms concealed potential risks that the medication posed to pediatric neurological development.

This legal action follows four weeks after Donald Trump promoted an unverified association between taking acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism spectrum disorder in young ones.

The attorney general is suing Johnson & Johnson, which formerly manufactured the medication, the only pain reliever suggested for women during pregnancy, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he said they "misled consumers by profiting off of pain and pushing pills regardless of the risks."

Kenvue says there is no credible evidence linking Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These corporations deceived for years, intentionally threatening numerous people to increase profits," Paxton, a Republican, said.

The manufacturer stated officially that it was "very worried by the spread of false claims on the reliability of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the welfare of US mothers and children."

On its online platform, the company also mentioned it had "continuously evaluated the applicable studies and there is no credible data that indicates a established connection between using paracetamol and autism."

Organizations acting on behalf of physicians and health professionals share this view.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has stated acetaminophen - the primary component in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for pregnant women to address pain and elevated temperature, which can create significant medical dangers if not addressed.

"In over twenty years of investigation on the utilization of acetaminophen in gestation, zero credible investigations has definitively established that the consumption of paracetamol in any trimester of gestation causes neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring," the group said.

The lawsuit references recent announcements from the previous government in asserting the drug is potentially dangerous.

Last month, Trump raised alarms from health experts when he instructed women during pregnancy to "resist strongly" not to take Tylenol when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then published an announcement that doctors should contemplate reducing the usage of Tylenol, while also mentioning that "a causal relationship" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in young ones has remains unverified.

The Health Department head RFK Jr, who oversees the Food and Drug Administration, had promised in spring to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the source of autism spectrum disorder in a short period.

But authorities cautioned that discovering a sole reason of autism - thought by researchers to be the outcome of a complicated interplay of inherited and environmental factors - would be difficult.

Autism is a category of permanent neurological difference and disability that affects how people encounter and relate to the environment, and is identified using doctors' observations.

In his court filing, the attorney general - a Trump ally who is running for US Senate - claims Kenvue and Johnson & Johnson "intentionally overlooked and attempted to silence the evidence" around paracetamol and autism.

This legal action aims to force the corporations "eliminate any promotional materials" that asserts Tylenol is reliable for women during pregnancy.

This legal action parallels the grievances of a group of parents of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD who sued the manufacturers of acetaminophen in two years ago.

The court threw out the lawsuit, stating studies from the family's specialists was not conclusive.
